What do you do?

As many of you know I want a dog. I do...and my husband finally wants a dog too (yippee). I grew up with dogs so I realize that they are like children (potty training, etc) and a lot of work. BUT what I didn't grow up with was living 1,000+ miles from family. So here is my question for all of you dog owners out there-what do you do with your dog when you go out of town? Do you put them in like a doggy day care? How much do those run? Or if you don't do that what do you do? I would love any help on this matter!!!

AND just in case you were wondering, my two favorite dogs right now are the Portugese Water Dog (just shaved short) and the Labrador. Yes i do like the bigger dogs.

When we lived in Flagstaff we took a trip to Disneyland then on up to Utah. We brought our dog with us but didn't want to have her around while in Anaheim so we left her in a PetsMart doggie hotel and that was about $25 per day; of course you can add ammenities like play time and TV time ;). Good luck on the doggie hunt.

We have used the dog kennels before as well. We have never had any problems - they were just kind of expensive. We have also taken the animals with us on the trip and then put them in a kennel there for the parts they could not participate in. Now I need to look up what your water dog looks like - I have never heard of that! I am always a sucker for a lab.

when we go out of town we have a few friends that are willing to take care of her. Both my friends are animal lovers so I feel okay to ask them. So far it has worked out fine and has not been a problem but the only reason is because I know they don't mind. it is a bit of a burden though but worth it! we love our lily to bad i can not say that about the other two dogs we have! ugh! haha but don't let going out of town keep you from having a dog....its not like you will be gone all the time just a few times a year it all works out annnnd your kids will love it just like you did when you were a kid! : )

first- nice choice on the lab! you should get a chocolate one. they are the most ADORABLE puppies. seriously. adn so cute when they are older.

second- you can let them stay with friends/family but for people who have dogs to begin with its always a headache for them. OR you could take them with you if they are well trained enough and just bring a portable kennel to keep them in at night or something. OR the doggy day care is a good idea too. i like that one bc you give them instructions on exactly what you want and they do it. it is around $25 a day though so thats the only sucky part.

im so glad yall are getting a dog!!! you will love it!

You know I want you to get a dog, so I can play with it. But, you may not know that I am a doggy babysitter. We love taking care of other people's animals while they are away. So, you can tell Dustin that as an added incentive, you have a FREE doggy sitter.

We have done different things. We left Toby at the Petsmart Hotel when we went somewhere he wasn't allowed to go. Over Christmas we left him with a friend that has a couple schnauzers of her own so she said it was great and her dogs loved it. When we go to Texas we take him with us. (He is small enough to ride in the airplane under the seats) Sometimes I think it might be easier if we didn't have him but then I think about how much Kaiya loves him and I could never get rid of him! I am such a dog lover so any dog sounds great but I do love those that don't shed. Oh, if you keep your dog outside I think many people will be willing to feed and water it. I can't wait to see what you do and what dog you choose!
